Scene from Osome Hisamatsu ukina yomiuri, 1848

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the play "Osome Hisamatsu ukina yomiuri" showing a couple in their tobacco shop, with Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as the husband Kimon no Kihei and Ichikawa Kodanji IV as his wife, Dote no Oroku, and Ichimura Uzaemon XII as the farmer Kyusaku. Kihei kneels over a cutting board with a large knife in his hand, smoking a pipe as he looks up at a vendor standing outside. The vendor stares back with an alarmed expression, his mouth slightly agape and eyes wide. Baskets are suspended from a wooden pole over his shoulder. Oroku glares at him suspiciously as she adjusts a dotted towel draped over her shoulder. Shelves behind her are stacked with boxes and circular containers, and the yellow chest below is decorated with tobacco leaves. Great expressive figures in a wonderfully detailed setting.
