Scene from Kosode Soga Azami no Ironui, 1859

Comments - Handsome scene from a kabuki play "Kosode Soga Azami no Ironui." After his love affair with the geisha Shinzo Izayoi was discovered, the priest Seishin was banished. The pair decided to commit suicide together by drowning, but neither succeeded. Here, the fisherman Yotsudeami no Gon rescues the beauty, pulling her aboard his boat with a solemn expression as she smiles gratefully. He wears a straw apron over a tied-dyed shirt and leggings, a large net hanging over the side of his boat. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I and Iwai Kumesaburo III. Nice expressive figures in an interesting setting with fine detail.
