Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Kataoka Gado II as Soga Juro Sukenari, the older of the two famous Soga Brothers. The pair has snuck into the Shogon Minamoto no Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji to kill Suketsune, the nobleman who murdered their father when they were just boys. He leans forward with his chin tilted up defiantly, holding a flaming torch aloft as he prepares to step into the cabin where their enemy is sleeping. He wears a blue and olive green kimono patterned with his trademark symbol of plovers in flight, the robe tucked up at the back for easier movement. The paulownia crest of the Minamoto clan appears on draperies above, adding graphic impact. A handsome design.
