Hiroshige III's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido - Handsome design from a small format Tokaido series by Hiroshige III focusing on the interactions of travelers along this famous route. Several of the scenes include comic mishaps, such as a hat blowing away, a runaway horse, or dogs pursuing a man for the octopus hanging from his waist. Some images reflect the modernization of Japan, showing western style clothing, a railroad train, or telegraph lines. A wonderful look at the human side of travel, with expressive characters in a variety of interesting city, village, and country settings. A charming and amusing interpretation of this classic Japanese subject.
