Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Fuwa Bansaku Threatening the Monk Ikkyu, 1865

Comments - Interesting scene of the commoner Fuwa Bansaku threatening the monk Ikkyu with a sword. He leans forward aggressively, thrusting out his chin while the monk looks over his shoulder at the lady's maid Iwahashi with a worried expression. The beauty kneels beside a roadside shelter made from straw mats and bamboo, throwing her hand out in alarm. Her kimono features a stylized ginkgo leaf pattern, tied with a red obi. Willow branches frame the night sky above a grassy slope. From left, the actors are Bando Mitsugoro VI, Ichikawa Danzo VI, and Ichimura Kakitsu IV. Nice expressive figures.
