Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Prince Genji and Beauties in a Garden

Comments - Lovely scene of Prince Genji and beauties in a garden on a wooden walkway over a pond. The nobleman smiles as he holds out a poem slip, a brush in his other hand. At left, a beauty holds a tray with an ink stone while her companion offers Genji a cup of sake. At right, a courtesan looks down at a girl carrying a folding fan. Behind them, carp bob to the surface of the water, blossoming irises lining the walkway. Flowering wisteria vines frame the scene above. A lovely design, nicely detailed with soft shading on the water and sky.
