A Moon-viewing Party with the Suma Koto in the Bedroom, 1861

Comments - Handsome scene of Prince Genji and beauties enjoying a moon viewing party from a verandah at Suma. He smiles happily as he looks up at the night sky, one hand resting atop a koto on a low red lacquer table at his side. At left, a beauty carries in a tray holding graduated sake cups and a miniature scene of a thatched-roof house and pine tree, the tray top decorated with splashing waves. At right, a princess smiles as she admires the view, holding her sleeve to her chin. Outside, pine branches frame a view of a lake with trees in light embossing on the white kimono collars and trim.
