Original Toyokuni II (1777 - 1835) Japanese Woodblock Print
Dog, 1830s

Series; Eastern Elegance, the Twelve Zodiac Animals

Dog, 1830s - Charming portrait of a beauty carrying a young child over her back. She wears a blue floral print kimono over a red under robe, her hair pulled back into a thick loop tied with a red ribbon. The young boy looks over her shoulder excitedly as she holds a jumping jack toy of a samurai with a spear. The inset at upper right depicts dogs beneath leafy branches. An attractive design from this rarely seen Toyokuni II series pairing beauties with the animals of the zodiac.
