Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki drama commonly known as "Diary of a Morning Glory," which tells the story of the lovely young Miyuki, who loses her vision from crying after she and her lover, Miyagi Asojiro, are parted due to a misunderstanding. Changing her name to Asagao (Morning Glory), she earns a living as a blind musician, playing the koto at an inn, where Asojiro, who has now become a samurai named Komazawa Jirozaemon, accidentally discovers her. The beauty kneels beside a koto, removing its cloth cover. Her kimono is bordered with her namesake morning glories. Jirozaemon sits in the center of the room, holding a sake cup and staring at his former sweetheart frown. The fellow next to him watches the samurai with a grimace, while the man kneeling below looks up suspiciously, a small package in his hand. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke, Bando Hikosaburo, Ichikawa Yonejuro (above), and Seki Sanjuro. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting.
