Original Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Encampment in Kohei Fifth Year, 1856

Comments - Dramatic scene of a Minamoto encampment in the fifth year of the Kohei period (1062) during the Former Nine Years War against the Abe clan for control of Mutsu Province.. At right, the blue-faced Abe no Sadato charges into his enemy's camp, gripping his sword above his head with an angry grimace. In the center, a samurai throws his hand out in a stopping motion as flames and sword drift up into the sky between them. At lower left, another retainer dashes forward with his spear. Just above him the great Minamoto general Hachimantaro Yoshiie sits on a folding stool with his bow in hand. At right, dead bodies, shields, and standards litter a battle field, with the paulownia crest of the Minamoto clan appearing on the cloth panels above. An interesting subject with expressive fine and fine detail in the armor and weapons.
