Original Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Osono Rokusa, 1881

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Osono Rokusa," the tragic story of the courtesan Osono and the former samurai turned carpenter Rokusabaro, known as Rokusa, who commit lovers' suicide. At left, Osono smiles happily at her sweetheart, wearing a brown plaid kimono tied with a lavender print obi and a red under with a lavender collar delicately patterned with stars. Rokusa stares back at her with an angry frown, a small axe in one hand and a plane in the other. At right, the servant Komahira grimaces angrily as he holds a blossoming cherry branch in each hand. The subject is divided diagonally, with a red tie-dyed textile pattern on the left half and a flowering cherry tree in silhouette at right. A striking design with large colorful figures.
