Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the enemies Nagoya Sanza and Fuwa Banzaemon accidentally meeting at a shrine. Each wears a black monk's mantle over his robes, and has a deep woven basket hat. At left, Sanza lifts his hat for a closer look, watching the beauty in the center suspiciously. At right, Banzaemon glares back at Sanza with a tight-lipped frown and furrowed brows. Behind them, streams of water run over a stone wall, with a red torii gate high above. Blossoming cherry branches frame the night sky above. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tossho, Sawamura Tanosuke, and Nakamura Shikan. Nicely detailed with a burnished checked pattern on the beauty's black kimono and embossing on the white kimono collar and trim. An interesting variation on the usual setting for this scene, which traditionally has the enemies meeting in the Yoshiwara.
