Series: New Ukiyo-e Beauties Compared
May, Fine Weather during the Rainy Season, 1924 - Lovely shin-hanga portrait of a beauty carrying an umbrella in case of spring rain. She looks over her shoulder expectantly, her slightly open mouth showing tiny even teeth. Her hair is pulled back into a soft bun adorned with a tortoiseshell comb, a silver hairpin, and pale pink and blue ribbons. She wears a gray coat over a brown striped kimono, and a blue-gray under robe decorated with leaves, tiny white blossoms, and silver swirls. A charming design, beautifully detailed with soft shading to add a sense of dimension to the hair, and silver mica in the under robe, hairpin, and the tip of the umbrella handle. This design is from a collaborative series by different artists featuring beauties for the months of the year, published by Murakami. A lovely beauty portrait by a rarely seen artist.
