Scene from Fukuju kaimu ryo denki, 1847 by Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Fukuju kaimu ryo denki, 1847

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Fukuju kaimu ryo denki" of three figures in a garden at night. In the center, the courtesan Umegae looks back over her shoulder with a distraught expression at the samurai Fujitaro. She wears a striking black outer kimono patterned with a dragon, and has a red tie-dyed robe over her shoulder. Fujitaro stares back at her with a frown, his brows furrowed. He holds a folding fan and carries a large woven hat. At right, the carpenter Hidari Jingoro watches the couple with a worried expression, carrying his tools over his shoulder and a tobacco pouch in his other hand. A blossoming cherry tree and a willow tree frame the night sky above a lamppost. The actors include Matsumoto Kinsho I as Fujitaro and Nakamura Utaemon IV as Hidari Jingoro. An attractive design with expressive figures and fine bokashi shading in the sky.
