The Carriage Scene from Sugawara Denju Tenerai Kagami, 1847 - 1852 by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Carriage Scene from Sugawara Denju Tenerai Kagami, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Handsome illustration of three samurai triplets in "The Carriage Scene" from the popular kabuki play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami." Named Matsuomaru (Pine), Umeomaru (Plum), and Sakuramaru (Cherry), the brothers become the victims of divided loyalties following the treacherous downfall of their sponsor, Sugawara, at the hands of Matsuomaru's employer, Shihei. Here, Matsumaru stands at right beside Shihei's elegant carriage, one arm flung out at his side as he leans forward with an angry frown. In the center, Umeomaru looks over his shoulder with a worried expression. At left, Sakuramaru tilts his head as he eyes Matsuomaru suspiciously. Each wears a blue and white plaid kimono over a red robe patterned with his namesake flower or tree. A striking design with a bold composition.
