Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Snow at Shinobazu Pond, Ueno

Comments - Fantastic triptych of three beauties walking through the snow alongside Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park. Each carries an umbrella under the gently falling snow. Two of the women wear short coats, and the beauty in the center has a scarf wrapped around her head against the color winter air. Benten Shrine is visible in the background on a small island, a single pedestrian crossing the arched bridge connecting it to the shore. A wonderful Hiroshige beauty subject and a classic winter landscape with fine shading in the water and sky. A rare subject to find complete in reprint.

Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
