Comments - Intriguing kabuki double portrait of Kuwanaya Tokuzo and the courtesan Higaki. To prevent a daimyo's son from spending time with the beauty, Tokuzo has kidnapped her, smuggling her out of the Yoshiwara in a trunk, then setting sail on his boat. He stares up at her with an angry grimace as he holds a compass in one hand. Higaki watches him with an alarmed expression, her mouth slightly agape as she realizes that she will not be returning to her sweetheart. In the play, Tokuzo kills Higaki and tosses her body into the river, but he is haunted by her ghost. A great design with expressive figures and handsome setting.
