Scene from Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari, 1852

Comments - Unusual scene from the kabuki play "Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari" of a beauty and samurai who appear to be magically walking on water. Jiraiya, the young samurai in the center, is actually a powerful toad magician. At left, the beauty Koshiji holds one edge of the straw hat carried by Jiraiya, who looks at her with a slightly puzzled expression as she steps lightly along the waves, lifting the hem of her iris bordered kimono. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, and Arashi Rikan III. A fascinating supernatural subject with wonderful detail in the panoramic ocean setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 29 1/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Three separate panels. Vertical fold in each panel. Slight separation along fold, a few wormholes, repaired. Slight creasing. Please see photos for details.
