Arresting Ishikawa Goemon, 1851

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of policemen attempting to arrest the robber Ishikawa Goemon at a building site. Seeking refuge on the scaffolding of an unfinished stone structure, the wild-haired man easily overcomes his opponents, tossing one guard over his back by the wrist while stepping on the neck of another and slashing a third with his sword. The enraged warrior grimaces at the policemen below, who shake their iron truncheons at him. In the center, a samurai clenches a truncheon between his teeth while he readies a rope to try to take the fellow captive. An elderly man watches the operation from a stool at left, looking up in horror. Ichikawa Kodanji IV plays Goemon. A dramatic design filled with energy and action, with wonderfully expressive figures and a fascinating setting. Beautifully detailed with a subtle burnished geometric pattern on the Goemon's black kimono.
