Sawamura Tanosuke III as the Spirit of the Oyama Doll and Nakamura Fukusuke I as Hidari Jingoro, 1860

Comments - Terrific kabuki double portrait of the carpenter Hidari Jingoro staring up with delight as his sculpture of a beautiful courtesan comes to life. According to legend, the artist carved a full-size doll that was so life-like that one night, while drinking sake and admiring his work, the sculpture became alive. He grins gleefully, waving his hand as the beauty smiles down at him. She wears a red kimono patterned with waterwheels and waves, her hair pulled back into two smooth loops adorned with many combs and hairpins. A charming subject, nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars and fine bokashi shading in the night sky.
