Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauty Holding a Child, Archer, and Monk, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a the courtesan Takao holding a young child in her arms, a rather dismayed expression on her face as she looks back at an archer, her mouth slightly agape. She cradles the child to her chest as she stands beside the garden gate. The archer returns her gaze with a worried frown, gripping his bow with both hands. At right, a komuso or wandering monk lifts his deep basket hat for a closer look at the couple, watching them suspiciously. He wears a black monk's mantle over a print kimono, a shakuhachi flute in his other hand. Panels decorated with sago palm trees line the back of the room. Nice expressive figures in an interesting setting.
