Scene from Chuko homare no takanawa, 1848

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Chuko homare no takanawa," a drama about the 47 ronin. At left, Hayano Kampei, a retainer of Lord Hangan raises his sword above his head with both hands as he prepares to slice a branch off a snow-covered pine tree. Lord Hangan's wife, Lady Kaoyo kneels beside him, watching him out of the corners of her eyes with a sly expression. From left, the actors are Nakamura Utaemon IV, Onoe Kikujiro II, and Ichikawa Kuzo II. The matron standing beside her looks back with a worried expression. A handsome design with expressive figures in a nicely detailed setting.
