Comments - Terrific scene from the play "Zoho Tsukushi no iezuto," showing the reunion between a young boy and his priest father. The daimyo Kato Sayemon became the priest Karukaya Doshin to escape his jealous wife, and his young son Kato Ishidomaru searched for him. When the boy tracked him down, Doshin initially refused to recognize his offspring, but finally relented after the child promised not to tell his mother his location. The priest hugs his son with a rather horrified expression as the child looks up at him, pleading with hands clasped. The other monks gather around, watching incredulously. From left, the actors are Otani Tomoemon IV, Matsumoto Kinsho, Bando Takesaburo I, Sawamura Sojuro V as Doshin, Sawamura Genpei II as his son, and Nakamura Shijiuku I. A poignant scene with a wonderful setting at the mountain temple, a rushing river flowing at left.
