Comments - Great okubi-e or large head portrait of Nakamura Tossho II as Karukaya Doshin in the play "Karukaya Doshin Tsukushi no Iezuto." The Kato Sayemon Shigeuji, a daimyo of Kyushu, fled his station and title and became the priest Karukaya Doshin to escape his jealous wife. His young son then went on a quest to track him down. Here, Doshin looks over his shoulder with an angry grimace as his son discovers him. He has a blue monk's cowl over his head and a black robe shaded in gray, a few maple leaves at lower right adding a note of color. An expressive figure.
