Iwafuji Berating Onoe

Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Kagamiyama." Iwafuji, a senior lady-in waiting, plots the downfall of Onoe, a junior lady-in-waiting, by substituting a zori sandal for a valuable statue in Onoe's care. When the sandal is discovered, Iwafuji publicly beats and humiliates Onoe, who decides to commit suicide. Onoe's faithful servant, Ohatsu, will later avenge her mistress's death by killing Iwafuji in the garden. Here, Iwafuji creates a scene after discovering the zori sandal in place of the statue. She holds the sandal threateningly over her head, glaring at the meek Onoe, who turns her faces away with a smile. The loyal maid Ohatsu sits at left, looking up with a strange grin, watching Iwafuji suspiciously. Nicely printed with fine embossed detail in the white kimono and kimono trim, and bokashi shading in the background.
