Beauty Playing Keep Away, 1909 - Charming portrait of a beauty playing keep away with a companion, holding a small poem card away from the hand reaching around from the left trying to recover it. She smiles happily, dressed in a blue kimono patterned with willow leaves and colorful balls., tied with a brown obi featuring a dragon and swirling clouds. Her hair is pulled back into a soft bun, adorned with a red lacquer comb, a floral hairpin, and an ornament in the shape of the Seven Lucky Gods' treasure ship. The portrait is inset against a soft shaded gray background with a blossoming plum tree in handsome calligraphic line work. An exquisitely printed image from a rarely seen series, with exceptionally fine detail in the hairline. Yamamoto Shoun studied Kano School painting, but is best known for his lovely woodblock portraits of women. His work bridges the traditional ukiyo-e and shin-hanga movements in Japanese art. Don't miss this opportunity to acquire a classic beauty image from this transitional period.
