Kumasaka Chohan and His Gang - Terrific triptych showing the famous thief Kumasaka Chohan and his gang of robbers gathered beneath an enormous pine tree, which served as their lookout. In the center, Chohan sits on a trunk with a huge naginata resting against his back, his white monk's cowl wrapped around his head. He glares angrily at the yamabushi or mountain monk wearing a tiny black cap at left, who argues with him as he gestures with his finger. The other men exchange scowls and grimaces as they watch, some dressed in armor. At bottom center, a fellow holds up a monkey mask, staring at it with an enraged expression. At lower right, a thief with his face partially hidden behind a black cloth looks suspiciously over his shoulder while gripping a sickle. Cloth panels provide privacy for the group, and tall grasses grow under the tree. A fantastic assortment of rogues, each expressive figure wonderfully detailed. A rare Hiroshige subject, one we've never come across before.
