The Legend of the Maidservant Otake Dainichi Nyorai, 1846 - 1852

Comments - Attractive scene from daily life of the maidservant Otake Dainichi Nyorai cleaning the floor. Otake faithfully served the Sakuma family in Odenma-cho in Edo, even taking care with the smallest tasks. A group of ascetics had been searching for the reincarnation of the Dainichi Nyorai Buddha, and when they saw Otake bending forward to pick up some rice, a halo of light appeared around her head, leading the ascetics to believe that she was a divine being. Here, she works cheerfully, smiling as she pours a bucket of water across the floor. The sleeves of her blue kimono are tied back with a red sash, and a blue and white cloth is wrapped about her hair. An open umbrella behind her give the appearance of a yellow halo around the beauty's head. A charming image of a rarely seen subject.
