Series; Snow, Moon, and Flowers

Moon in the Shin-Yoshiwara, 1885 - Terrific view of the bustling Yoshiwara on a moonlit night. At left, two rickshaws pass through the entrance gate topped with glass lamps, joining the crowds of people filling the street. A policeman in a white uniform stands nearby. Men and women stroll along in informal summer kimono, while at man at lower right wears a plaid suit and a straw boater hat. Beauties enjoy the view from the upper stories of the teahouses extending into the distance, a full moon overhead. A great image with wonderful detail, including a dusting of mica over the gray clouds, and metallic pigment on the moon that has oxidized to a gray tone.
