Original Yoshio Okada (born 1934) Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauty, circa 1970s

Series; The Tale of Genji

The Tale of Genji - Considered by some as the first novel ever written, "The Tale of Genji" is one of the greatest works of Japanese literature. Written by the noblewoman Lady Murasaki Shikubu in the early 11th century during the Heian era, "The Tale of Genji" tells the story of Prince Genji, recounting his life, loves, and the aristocratic world around him in fifty-four chapters. Lady Murasaki's tale of courtly life remains a classic of literature today.

Yoshio Okada - Very little is known about the artist Yoshio Okada, who was born in 1934 and currently lives in Tokyo. He designed a small number of prints in the 1970s and 1980s, and is perhaps best known for a series of "Tale of Genji" illustrations. His striking and beautifully carved and printed woodblocks are rarely seen in the market, and are a fantastic choice for a contemporary collector.

Beauty, circa 1970s - Handsome and extremely rare illustration of a mysterious beauty, peering rather seductively over the shoulder of her elegant robe. This is one of four designs that Okada created for a contemporary "Tale of Genji" series. The bold and graceful curves of the hair cascade over the folds of the cloth, creating a striking contrast to the soft blue color and delicate patterning, and the bright red-orange of the pants. Includes gold mica on the scroll and blossom pattern of the robe. An incredible late 1970s Pop Art image with a strong graphic appeal, almost never found on the market. A real knock-out modern Japanese woodblock. Published by Yuyudo with publisher's seal in left margin. This print comes with the original windowed viewing folder as issued by the publisher.
