Series; Eastern Brocades, Day and Night Compared

Eastern Brocades, Day and Night Compared - Designed in 1886, Chikanobu's extraordinary "Eastern Brocade" series features a fantastic range of subjects, including brave warriors, eerie ghosts, timeless beauties, and famous figures from traditional tales of triumph and treachery. These beautiful images bring the history and legends of Japan to life with colorful characters and a wonderful attention to detail. Note the appealing compositions and fine printing in these Meiji era masterworks, many of which include deluxe treatments such as burnishing, embossing, or the addition of mica. These attractive designs are a nice choice to collect or display.

Yoshida Mansion, No. 30 - Beautiful design of Princess Sen, who became a Buddhist nun after the death of her second husband. She retired to the former Yoshida mansion in Kyoto, where one day she discovered a young man named Hanai Iki spying on her women. She found the spy with one of her attendants in an inner room, which prompted her to kill them both. She is shown here grabbing the young man by the wrist as a beauty watches in horror. The inset above shows the dead Hanai Iki being unceremoniously tossed down a well. Wonderful detail in the sumptuous household furnishings and fine embossed detail in the beauty's white kimono.
