Series; The New Biography of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, 1883

Crossing a Mountain in Snow, 1883 - Fantastic illustration of samurai crossing a mountain during heavy snow. The warrior in the lead grips the horse around the neck, leaning back on one knee as he negotiates the steep slope. A general on horseback urges him on, thrusting his spear ahead. Two more retainers follow along at the side and rear, determined expressions on their faces and clumps of snow are dislodged and tumble down the mountainside. The rooftops of a house can be seen below at lower left. A dramatic design with a striking composition, fine detail in the armor, and bokashi shading in the wintry sky.
