Series; Thirty-six Modern Restaurants, 1878

Thirty-six Modern Restaurants - Kunichika's 1877 - 1878 series "Thirty-six Modern Restaurants" depicts beauties at popular restaurants in different locations. Women are shown serving a meal, relaxing in the garden or on a verandah, or arriving or leaving a teahouse. These colorful designs are nicely detailed with handsome interior and exterior settings showing an interest in Western perspective. An attractive Meiji era beauty series, seldom seen.

The Restaurant Hira-Sei in Fukagawa - Lovely image of two beauties at the Hira-Sei Restaurant in Fukagawa. One stands on the stepping stones in the courtyard garden, looking up at the fireflies glowing in the night sky. Her companion sits just inside the doorway, relaxing with a pipe in one hand and a fan in the other. A beautiful summer scene with a willow tree framing the view and soft shading in the sky.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Light toning and soiling, a few stains and creases, slight curling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
