Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Fuwa Banzaemon, 1848

Comments - Terrific portrait of the actor Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Fuwa Banzaemon in the play "Mukashigatari inazuma zoshi." Banzaemon has fallen in love with the courtesan Katsuragi, unaware that she is the wife of his enemy Nagoya Sansaburo. He is shown sitting cross-legged in her private quarters, leaning back as if taken by surprise. He wears a fine black kimono patterned with jagged red lightning bolts and gray clouds over a red under robe, his two swords resting on the floor nearby. A folding screen patterned with cranes in flight and pine trees provides privacy for the bed behind him. A fine expressive image with a handsome setting.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/8" + left margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. Small hole at edge, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases and slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
