Tsuchiyama: General Tamura and the Demon of the Suzuka Mountains - Intriguing Kuniyoshi print showing the deity Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy providing divine intervention to assist a samurai. Rays of light emanate from her presence into the scene below, where the horned demon Shuten-doji of the Suzuka Mountains leans on an armrest with an angry scowl. At right, the great warrior Sakanoue Tamuramaro appears in the doorway to rescue the young beauty, who throws her arm out in surprise, stifling her cries with her kimono sleeve. A fantastic image from this legendary tale, beautifully detailed.
