The Soga Brothers Confronting Suketsune, 1868

Comments - Great scene of the Soga Brothers confronting the nobleman Kudo Suketsune, who murdered their father. At left, Soga Goro looks up with an expression of contempt as he pushes up the sleeve of his trademark butterfly print kimono, his other hand resting on the hilt of his sword. In the center, Suketsune glares back at him, gripping his short sword in his outstretched hand. At right, Soga Juro watches his enemy with an evil grin. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji I, Bando Kamezo I, and Ichimura Kakitsu IV. Nice expressive figures set off by a deep blue background, detailed with a burnished pattern in the black court cap and embossing in the white kimono trim.
