The Empress at the Railway Station in Nishikyo, 1876 - Attractive triptych depicting the Meiji Empress and court beauties in procession at the railway station in Nishikyo. At left, a young woman carefully carries an elaborate headdress decorated with strings of beads and a phoenix. Two women follow behind leading the empress by the hand, a third woman sheltering her with a purple Western-style umbrella. The women are all dressed in delicately embossed white robes tucked into full red hakama pants, with colorful outer kimono. Two horses lead a carriage alongside the group, with the railroad station seen in soft silhouette among the trees in the background at left. An intriguing Yoshitoshi subject with burnishing in the black carriage and soft bokashi shading in the background.
