Yofuku: Western Clothing

Series; Eastern Customs: Enumerated Blessings

Eastern Customs: Enumerated Blessings - Attractive image from a Chikanobu series published from about 1887 to 1890. These charming scenes illustrate words that include the syllable fuku (or huku), which has many different meanings, but the primary meaning is blessing or good fortune. Women, children, and families are shown in daily life, playing games, enjoying different traditions, and celebrating festivals and events. Beautifully drawn with fine detail and vibrant color, these lovely Chikanobu designs offer a wonderful look at life in Japan during the Meiji era. A rarely seen series and a nice choice for a collector.

Yofuku: Western Clothing - Interesting depiction of two beauties and a young girl dressed in the latest Western fashions as they relax in a room overlooking a garden. One woman sits in a plush red velvet chair, looking up as her companion leans over the back of it. She wears a tightly fitted purple floral bodice over a full skirt patterned with diamonds and trimmed with ruffles. Her hat is adorned with feathers and ribbons. The girl wears a short red dress, striped stockings, and tall leather boots, and she holds the leash of a pet dog. Elegant floral drapes are tied back with a tasseled cord at right, framing a view of a blossoming cherry tree and a fountain spraying in the pond beyond. A colorful and intricately detailed design, in beautiful condition.
