Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Sumo Wrestlers Arguing

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych showing two sumo wrestlers arguing. The older, more experienced sumo Chogoro purposely lost a match to the young Chokichi in hopes of earning a favor from his patron. After Chokichi learns the truth, he lashes out at Chogoro. At left, the young athlete raises a tea cup above his head, ready to smash it down angrily. He wears a blue kimono with patterned with large horses and cherry blossoms, a black robe draped over his shoulder. Chogoro glares back at him with a frown, raising his fn behind his head. He wears an olive green kimono with a design of butterflies and tie-dyed clouds. At right, a woman looks up with a worried expression while the man behind her watches with pair. Nice large expressive figures.
