Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Samurai, Nobleman, and Beauties

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene showing a samurai confronting a nobleman with a group of beauties gathered before a fine folding screen featuring an image of Mt. Fuji. The daimyo stares over his shoulder with a frown, his brows furrowed, dressed in a red robe patterned with swirling clouds and cranes in flight. The bearded samurai looks back at him with his chin slightly tilted upwards, a naginata resting against his shoulder. He wears an elegant vest over a kimono and suit of armor. The women lean forward anxiously as they watch him, dressed in elegant kimono, their long hair flowing over their shoulders. The snow-capped peak of Fuji makes a striking setting for the figures. Great color and detail in this attractive design.
