Conversation in a Shop, 1855

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene taking place in a shop with straw-wrapped bales stacked in the room at left. In the center, a man wearing an informal tie-dyed kimono rests his elbow atop a wooden plank with writing on it. He scowls as he looks over his shoulder at his companion, who stares back at him with a sober expression as he pushes up his kimono sleeve. At right, a beauty emerges through the doorway curtains, smiling happily. Books hang on the wall, and a low desk below holds an account book and a writing set. The actor in the center panel is Ichikawa Kodanji IV. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 29 7/8" + margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few wormholes and small holes, repaired. Slight soiling and creasing, a few small stains, slight paper remnants at right edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
