47 Ronin, Act 3

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych depicting Act 3 from the "Kanadehon Chushingura," the drama about the 47 ronin. Kampei and his lover, the beauty Okaru, are shown at the back gate to the palace, confronting a guard as they prepare to elope. At left, a guard playfully grabs hold of Okaru's kimono sleeve as he points to his chin with his finger. The beauty smiles faintly as she looks back at him, while the samurai frowns at him with an annoyed expression. At left, a bridge leads over the moat to the palace complex, which stretches across the background. Nice large figures with an interesting setting, detailed with bokashi shading in the evening sky. Nakamura Fukusuke IV appears as Okaru.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 27 3/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
