Beauty with a Bamboo Stalk, 1876

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of Nakamura Shikan IV as a beauty holding a stalk of bamboo with a folding fan tied to it. She grins happily as she looks at the nobleman at left, who stares back at her with a wary frown. At right, a commoner plays the shamisen and sings as his companion watches with interest, resting his chin on his hand. Both men wear informal summer cotton kimono patterned with large blue characters, and have dotted towels draped over their shoulders. Nice large expressive figures set off by the deep red background. Includes embossing in the nobleman's white kimono.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 3/8" x 28 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight separation at ends of two vertical folds, a few small holes and thinning spots, repaired. Slight soiling and rubbing, slight paper remnants at left side of panels. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
