The Great Battle at Yashima, circa 1849 - 1852

Comments - Terrific view of the famous Battle of Yashima in 1184 between Taira and Minamoto forces. This triptych shows the fighting along the shore with the Taira fleet out in the bay, standards and banners fluttering above the ships in the ocean breezes. Locked in combat, the warriors Naozane and Atsumori fall to the ground from their horses in the center, their swords lying nearby. At left, two more mounted samurai clash with naginata as they gallop toward each other. At right, Matsudaira Norimori wrestles with Minamoto no Yoshiyasu. A great panoramic scene with pine trees framing the expansive view of the ocean. A handsome design with fine detail in the figures.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels. Horizontal fold near top edge. A few small wormholes and holes, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing, slight rubbing and a few stains at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
