Threatening a Beauty, 1824

Comments - Great kabuki scene from the play " Ehon Gappoga-Tsuji," a tale about revenge that takes place at the crossroads of Gappo. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VII as Taheiji, Shiro Ichiro III as Oyone, and Bando Mitsugoro II. Here, Taheiji threatens the beauty, pointing a sword at her as she cowers on the ground, hiding behind her sleeve. The fellow at right comes to her defense, drawing his sword to fight the attacker. Smoke rises from a bonfire of pine branches at left, and an overturned folding screen is a sign of the struggle that has taken place. Nice expressive figures in this interesting subject.

Artist - Toyokuni I (1769 - 1825)

Image Size - 14" x 29 1/4"

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Slight toning and soiling, very slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
