Sino-Japanese Pitched Battles: Two Generals Fighting at Fenghuangcheng, 1894

Comments - Fantastic scene of two generals dueling on horseback at Fenghuangcheng during the Sino-Japanese War. The Japanese officer at right slashes out at his enemy with his sword while his opponent's horse rears on its hind legs, the rider gripping the reins and his pole arm as he falls backwards. At left, other Chinese troops flee, leaving behind weapons and a hat scattered on the ground. Another Japanese soldier emerges from the grasses at right with his bayonet fixed. A Japanese flag can be seen beyond the treetops behind him, while at left, a fortress is partly obscured by clouds of smoke. Beautiful shading and wood grain impression in the background. A handsome design, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
