Taikoki, Act 10, 1890

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from Act 10 of the play "Taikoki," based on a biography of great leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi. At right, Ichikawa Gonjuro I plays Mashiba Hisayoshi (the real-life Toyotomi Hideyoshi). In the center, a young samurai stares at him with a sober frown, holding his horned battle helmet aloft. A young beauty kneels at his side, her hand on his wrist as she tries to restrain him. At left, a warrior wearing a straw coat over his armor emerges from the bushes, lifting his hat above his head. Nice vibrant color and expressive figures, detailed with embossing in the elderly woman's white hair.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 14" x 27 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color as shown. Three separate panels. Small tear at edge, repaired. A few pinpoint holes, not noticeable. Paperclip rust mark in margin. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
