Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Mitsugumi House

Comments - Handsome view of the five-story Mitsui-gumi House, completed in 1874, which housed the First National Bank. The Western-style lower floors are topped with a miniature castle reflecting shogunate style, complete with a tiled roof. The imposing structure is surrounded with a walled courtyard topped with an iron fence, with blossoming cherry trees just inside the entrance. Pedestrians and laborers share the street in front with a rickshaw and a carriage. An interesting contemporary image of a modern building in Meiji era Tokyo.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 8 7/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Slight paper remnants and thinning on reverse at top corners from previous mounting. Small hole, a couple small tears at edges, repaired. Slight toning and creasing, a few small spots and stains. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
