Onoe Baiko VI as Sayuri in Modoribashi, 1925 - Handsome kabuki portrait of Onoe Baiko VI as Sayuri in the dance drama "Modoribashi." Sayuri is actually the demon of Mt. Atago, disguised as a beautiful young woman, who appears to the warrior Watanabe Tsuna. Her head just barely tilted, she looks slightly to the side with a watchful expression. She wears a pale green outer robe over a violet kimono patterned with blossoms and crescent shapes, over a red under robe with an embossed pink collar featuring stylized waves, a roll of tissues tucked just inside. Her hair is pulled softly back, adorned with an ornament covered with small flowers. The figure is set against a beautiful shimmering blue mica background. A terrific, subtly expressive portrait from Shunsen's "Creative Prints, Collected Portraits of Shunsen," a series lavishly published by Watanabe in a limited edition of only 150 prints. A lovely image.
