The Fox Tadanobu, 1848

Comments - Great scene from the popular kabuki play "Yoshitsune Sembon zakura." In the center, the samurai Tadanobu, who is actually a magic fox in disguise, reveals his true nature when Shizuka gozen plays a small hand drum, which was made from the skin of his parents. He appears in a cloud of smoke emanating from a shamisen at right, kneeling with his hands held out before him like paws. Lady Shizuka smiles as she taps the drum, seemingly unaware of the transformation taking place. At right, Minamoto no Yoshitsune watches with a sober frown as he sits on a cushion, resting one hand on a lacquer armrest. Blossoming cherry trees frame the sky overhead. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII. A handsome design with beautiful color.
